hi there!

there really is no mall near me, but there are several around the city, so i walk to whichever one the people want to go to at the current time.  i haven't taken a bus/taxi since i arrived at my hotel.  walking is much easier, and healither, i might add.

i eat lunch and supper with my host padres, and my madre makes breakfast for me to eat.  generally take an apple with me to eat during my break between classes.  i feel as if i'm in high school again because all classes are in one building, with the same people all day long.  don't go home until classes are done for the day.  normally my padres don't eat until 1 or 2 in the afternoon anyway, so it's fine.  my host mom doesn't do much outside the home, except for maybe take care of some kids every once in a while, but she loves to sew, so that keeps her busy!  don't know what my padre does, honestly.  i think he's retired, so he just hangs out at the house all day.  since they don't speak english, i am forced to speak spanish to them.

no football here for me.  i get to watch soccer or rugby on at least three different channels.  they're interesting to watch, but since i don't know how the game is played, it's not as much fun for me.  so excited for the vikings!  i even know how to say it in spanish, because it was on a game show: el Viking :-) .

some of y'all have been asking about my homework load, and it's much less than what i would have had back in the states.  the only out-of-class assignments i have been given are worksheets for my translation and grammar classes.  nothing yet for art, lit, or hispanoamerican culture.

so i thought i would get laundry done only once a week, but my madre has done it at least twice since i got here.  not sure why she does it more than necessary, but i really appreciate it!  also, the walls are paper thin, so it's pretty easy to hear what goes on in other apartments or in the street from much of the apartment.  generally just young children watching their ridiculous shows and crying, so nothing terribly awkward.

no matter where i go, i end up smelling like smoke.  thankfully, though, my coat doesn't keep the smell long.  but today i was in a cafe for only about half an hour before we left to go back to campus, and i already reeked like a chain smoker.  it was disgusting, because for the next two classes i had to sit and smell the smoke oozing off my clothes.  thankfully, abigail suggested that when i shower, hang up whatever smells in the bathroom and the steam will act as a kind of dry cleaner.  will try if my sweater still reeks tomorrow morning.

all for now!  hasta la vista!
